Craig Downs, Ph.D. is Executive Director of Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to build scientific and technological capacities to address environmental health concerns.  Craig Downs has published more than 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has contributed and edited a number of scientific books.  He has collaborated with scientists from over 35 countries on topics specific to ecotoxicology, environmental toxicology and environmental health policy.  His research and advocacy has resulted in the regulated reduction or banning of a number of chemicals – from booster chemicals in marine anti-foulant paint, moratoriums on pesticides, removing preservatives and artificial flavorings from processed foods, and mass changes in chemical and microplastic usage in the personal care product industry. His research has focused on the toxicopathology and environmental contamination of chemicals in explosive ordnance (e.g., TNT, HMX, and picrate), crop management products, plastics, mosquito control, eutrophication from landscape, sewage and mariculture sources, and chemicals and ingredients used in the personal care product industry.  One of his scientific publications made Time Magazine’s list of “12 Things You Need to Know” http://time.com/4082272/coral-reefs-sunscreen-oxybenzone/

Haereticus Environmental Laboratory is almost wholly staffed by volunteers from communities in diverse geographical regions (e.g., Florida, Hawaii, California, Maine, Montana, Texas, Michigan). All of these are community-science projects whose participants local folks that are concerned about their community health and environment.
