What We Do

Haereticus Environmental Laboratory (HEL) is a non-profit scientific organization dedicated to increasing the scientific, social, and economic knowledge of natural environmental habitats to better conserve and restore threatened environmental habitats and resources.

Did You Know?

Small populations and entire ecosystems across the globe are in a challenged or declining condition. While steps have been taken to understand the nature of these changes and mitigate adverse impacts, there are few concerted efforts that apply scientific experimentation using forensic methods and protocols.

Non-biased scientific research, coupled with cooperation and collaboration between governments, community groups, institutions, and private businesses, can improve the condition of ecosystems, public health, and maintain public trust. Sustainable policies and practices in resource management can be realized by cultivating integrated knowledge about the scientific, social, and economic aspects of environments, thus enabling quality research, informing the community, and supporting model restoration, management, and conservation projects.

What We Do

Haereticus Environmental Laboratory Focuses on two programs: Education + Outreach and Scientific + Applied Research

Education + Outreach

The Education and Outreach program informs and involves the public in critical issues concerning marine environments.  Initiatives include:

  • Website – HEL keeps it supporters and stakeholders up to date on important issues.

  • Media relations – HEL helps educate the press about complex issues facing marine environments.

  • Scholarships and Fellowships – HEL supports the next generation of environmental stakeholders by providing funds and opportunities for study.

  • Tabling, Speakers Bureau, Community and Training Workshops, and Conferences – HEL brings its facilities to the discussion of these issues into the public domain.

Scientific + Applied Research

The Scientific and Applied Research program obtains an understanding of environmental processes and the dynamic interplay between the environment and social and economic forces.  Initiatives include:

  • Scientific Research – HEL will conduct, alone or in collaboration, scientific research on environmental and ecotoxicological issues.

  • Facilitation services – HEL acts as a facilitator between natural environment stakeholders to better initiate effective best-use practices in environmental and ecotoxicological assessments.

  • Scientific Advisors – HEL counsels and advises research and independently reviews research being conducted.
